Murder on Screen

Summer is upon us and with the coming heat waves, plan for some indoor activities to while away the hours. Sometimes, with all the hundreds of cable channels available to you, there isn't one single thing on the TV that you want to watch.  So that's when a trip to your local library is in order. Here's a selection of the many mystery TV series available on DVD:

Bosch - the TV series

Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Amazon Studios is busy lining up pilots for their slate of shows.Whilegreenlighting mostly comedies and kids' shows, the studio is cleverly picking up a great drama, a police procedural based on Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch books.

Reportedly, Connelly co-wrote the pilot with Eric Overmeyer, Treme co-creator/executive producer. Looks like we're one step closer to seeing Harry Bosch on TV. Stay tuned for more.

The Heist -- For a Good Time, Read It Now!

Take one part Janet Evanovich, #1 N.Y. Times bestselling author of the Stephanie Plum books, add one part Lee Goldberg, bestselling author and TV writer for Monk, mix thoroughly. The result is an amazing concoction of adventure, thrilling hijinks, and plenty of laughs. Although I, too, must wait until its release tomorrow to read The Heist, being familiar with both Evanovich's and Goldberg's works, I know I'm correct in predicting a hit! I love a good con caper and this looks to be the perfect summer fare.

Here's the scoop on this new series debut:

FBI Special Agent Kate O’Hare is known for her fierce dedication and discipline on the job, chasing down the world’s most wanted criminals and putting them behind bars. And while Kate has made quite a name for herself for the past five years the only name she’s cared about is Nicolas Fox—an international crook she wants in more ways than one.

Audacious, handsome, and dangerously charming, Nicolas Fox is a natural con man, notorious for running elaborate scams on very high-profile people. At first he did it for the money. Now he does it for the thrill. But just when it seems that Nicolas Fox has been captured for good, he pulls off his greatest con of all: He convinces the FBI to offer him a job, working side by side with Special Agent Kate O’Hare.

Problem is, teaming up to stop a corrupt investment banker who’s hiding on a private island in Indonesia is going to test O’Hare’s patience and Fox’s skill. Not to mention the skills of their ragtag team made up of flamboyant actors, wanted wheelmen, and Kate’s dad. High-speed chases, pirates, and Toblerone bars are all in a day’s work . . . if O’Hare and Fox don’t kill each other first.

British Crime Dramas on DVD

I just discovered a new DVD set of British crime dramas that I had the pleasure of watching over the weekend (I just love making new discoveries!). Although the DVDs are new to the Burbank Public Library, the show has been running in the UK since 2009. Above Suspicion is based on the bestselling books by Lynda La Plante, who also writes and produces the TV series.

On her first day on the job, rookie detective Anna Travis (Kelly Reilly, Sherlock Holmes) wears the wrong shoes, throws up at a crime scene, and faints at a postmortem. Does she have what it takes to succeed in what is still mostly a man's world? Ciarán Hinds (Political Animals, Game of Thrones, among many other credits) plays Anna's brusque boss, DCI James Langton.

I highly recommend this title and look forward to watching the next set.  A great cast, excellent storytelling make this a must-watch series! The library owns set 1 and 2; hopefully the next two sets will be released in the US soon.
